La Serena - Northchile

 


Directly at the coastline of the Pacific, only 470 km north of Santiago, you find the colonial city La Serena, the second-oldest town in Chile. With its 140.000 inhabitants, being the capital of the fourth region of Coquimbo, not only the numerous beautiful beaches make it a very famous holiday destination.

 


Besides nice little markets and shopping areas, which invite you to stroll around, you can also enjoy the beautiful and newly built Japanese garden called El Corazón (between the Panamericana and Pablo Muñoz). To get some interesting information about the people, culture and history of Chile, there are four well equipped museums for you to visit: `Museo Histórico Gabriel González Videla´ (former president of Chile, at Matta 495), ´Museo Arqueológico´ with a valuable collection of Indian Artifacts (at Cienfuegos 224), ´Museo Colonial de Arte Religioso´ (Balamceda 640) and the ´Museo Mineralógico Ignacio Domeyco´(Anfión Muñoz 870).

 

 


For the ´gourmets´ La Serena offers a great variety of fine cuisine. Enjoy a excellent cup of coffe at the Café Colonial (at Balmaceda) and have dinner at the restaurant El Patio, which also offers a great variety of vegetarian dishes (at Prat 470). And if you have some more time left it is well worth visiting the fish market in Coquimbo, only 9 km from La Serena.

 


One of the best one-day excursions in the northern region is a trip to the off-shore island Isla de Damas, easy reached from La Serena. You are able to observe dolphins, penguins, sea lions and cormorants there. Other excursions e.g. to Vicuna, Valle Elqui, Valle Limarí or Valle del Encanto can be done by yourself or with an organised tour.

 


"City of colonial churches", La Serena easily deserves this title. Especially around the Plaza de Armas you can visit numerous beautiful churches, mostly built in the 18th and 19th century.

 


When you have enjoyed the beautiful city of La Serena you can easily get to our Hacienda Los Andes. Simply take a colectivo (shared taxi) to Ovalle, departing from Domeyko. From Ovalle there are two buses daily directly to the Hacienda (Hurtado), departing from the fería. Don´t worry, the busdrivers know us!
