Chile Travel - Guide book information

The famous German Chile guide book “Reise-Know-How” reports over many pages about Hacienda Los Andes: Appeared in: Reise-Know-How Chile and the Easter Island from Günther Wessel, Publishing company: Reise-Know-How-Verlag Peter Rump GmbH, Bielefeld 3. Edition 2003 Hacienda Los Andes (Desert area/La Serena The Hacienda Los Andes is situated 1000 metres above sea level, in the middle of a magnificent oasis surrounded by the desert-like mountains of the Andes. From La Serena it is a two and a half hours drive along the green valley of Rio Hurtado. Clark Stede from Germany and Manuela Paradeiser from Austria have rebuilt a beautyful 100-year old hacienda, that hasn’t been used for 30years. The hacienda, including a Sauna and Jacuzzi, was reconstructed in colonial style. The two horse-lovers have specialised in horsetours, but they also do four-wheel-drives with their guests in the surroundings and have built a nature-trail on their property. In addition they do some farming, so that a lot of what you get to eat there has grown on the hacienda. Before opening the gates of the hacienda in the season of 2001/2002, Clark and Manuela have run Campo Aventura in Cochamó for several years. They offer tours from one to eight days, with the longer trails leading back to the hacienda at the end of some days to spend the night there.

Inka-Trail On this one-day-trail along historic Inca routes (who searched here mainly for gold) you spend five hours in the saddle. After an introduction to your horse and the chilean riding-style at 9:30 in the morning, you head out through the magnificent green oasis of the Valley Rio Hurtado. Branches of large willow-trees move softly in the wind, the fruits of the numerous pepper trees glow pink and everywhere in the bushes you can hear parrots screaming. After a river crossing the landscape changes into rough canyons, with long-branched cactusses along the trail that leads steeply upwards. The changing panoramas of the surrounding mountains and the different colours of the rocks that are rich in ore around here, are breathtaking. At midday the tour arrives at an old site of the Molle-Indians that is dated between the 2nd and 7th century. Here, in the smooth-washed rock formations you can find numerous rock paintings. After a long lunch break in the shadow of old Algarobo-trees the trail leads on downhill through open landscapes, where you can see small green oasis as soon as there is some water. Soon the trail gets very steep and slippery with loose rocks, so that you need to get out of the saddle. The well trained Criollo horses find their own way down this difficult part of the trail. Not even half an hour later horse and rider meet again and continue on their way back along the Rio Hurtado to the Hacienda Los Andes.

Sierra Trail The Sierra Trail is another one-day-trip with about five hours in the saddle, starting out at 10 a.m.. The route leads through the green valley of the Rio Hurtado with beautiful trees and rippling water, crosses the river itself and soon climbs uphill to sparse heights. Because of/With these steep climbs not only the horses start sweating soon! The mountains and valleys resemble closely the western movies you know from cinema, your eyes view mainly cactuses, thorny bushes and old Algarobo-trees. Passing fantastic rock formations, the group of riders gets up higher and higher onto a mountain range, with a breathtaking view across the Andean landscape. Every now an then you can see small green patches where farmers live their solitary life’s on the breeding of goats. By now the sun burns so hot, that the cool beer at a break in the small village of Serron becomes an unforgettable experience. Continuing for some minutes on a dusty road, the trail then leads up and down in serpentines through marvellous canyons, that drop down immediately several hundreds of metres at your left- or right-hand side. Only well-trained mountain horses won’t get nervous here, easily finding their way back to the hacienda

Maiten-Trail This trail takes two days. The night is spent in the outdoor-camp Maiten at 2100 metres above sea level. After breakfast at 9.00 a.m. on the hacienda the saddlebags get packed and the riders prepare for the tour. At first, the landscape is quite similar to that along the Sierra-Trail: Steep mountains and canyons change with high plateau’s and endless views over the sierra. When the sun sets behind the Andes with the mountains glowing in red, brown, yellow and green colours, the landscape gets even more beautiful. Long before the most unbelievable of all starry skies shines above the Chilean desert, the group of riders arrives in the green oasis of Maiten. While the guests can refresh themselves, the guides build up the tents for the night. The goat farmers Maria and José bring freshly baked bread, figs, corn and pears, grown in their garden. By now it is time for the Asado, a typical chilean barbecue on the campfire – an experience of its own accompanied by a brilliant starry sky. Sitting around the campfire, Clark tells a lot of stories about the time when gold diggers roamed the wild mountains. On the next day the trail passes some deserted gold mines, so if you` got your hammer with you, you can try your luck!
